This site is great. A new angle on hockey sites that we have all seen before. But can we be honest for a second? The name needs to be updated, McEichel is clever but the tank has been, and will always be the Oilers job. Alright, so WhoisdraftingaftertheOilers.com doesn’t have the same ring to it. Touche Chris.
The Oilers, every season, they go to work, they pick up their lunch pails, they train and they go out and get that top 5 pick.
You can all try, but the blue and orange print has been right before your eyes for too long.
Does it start with goaltending? Hell yes it does.
Victor “not so” Fasth, Ben “Sievins”, Richard Bach”up”man, Ilya “Breeze by my glove”, Jason LaBarb”ie Doll”, Devan Du…. You know what, this list is a replacement for ipecac.
Some of the goalies over the last decade or so have been serviceable. You can see it in their services with other teams after leaving ours (see Devan Dubnyk currently with the Coyotes). But all you can ask for from your netminder has to be a saving grace save from time to time. Not necessarily Dwayne Roloson in the ’06 finals:
(Gotta love the pre-HD clips)
but is a game saving stop too much to ask, like once a game? Because let’s all face it the Oilers aren’t making the playoffs any time soon unless by some miracle they fix it all.
Is it all their fault? No chance.
As I said, your goalie needs to be able to make some saving grace saves.. but you can’t expect a goalie to make saves on 3rd and 4th.. or in the Oilers case 5th and 6th rebounds. Not to mention all of the 3 or 4 breakaways they give up on a nightly basis.
That my friends lies squarely on the defence. There is an absolute suicide row of players who have ‘graced’ the D corps.. and by graced I mean shat on then promptly left for the next user to take up their next porta-potty. These disastrous combinations have left us with serviceable, and mediocre guys playing ridiculous minutes, or pairings way above their head (see Klefbom, Petry, Schultz, Ference). Confidence, style, agression all ruined beyond recognition.
It can’t be just the D and the Goalies, can it?
No it’s really not. As sad as it is to say. The kids aren’t alright.
With the obvious exception of Mr. Yakupov, all of the top picks, and Eberle have shown flashes of brilliance. Nail has yet to realize that same potential, but when you have spent the your time in the NHL trying to learn how to play defence for the first time in your life.. you must question why you were taken 1st overall.
This is a team that should have absolutely no problem scoring goals, that can’t score to save their lives. And of course, if they do, it’s because the goalie backing them up has gone done and let in 3 or 4 already.
Even the clear number 1 player in the group, Hall has now begun to show the signs of his G.a.S. levels dropping below critical mass.
And that’s the problem with being this good and being this bad. You forget what it is, what it takes to be good again. From GM, to players, it’s a finely tuned, lottery pick making machine.
Good luck to all the rest, but I can already hear it now:
“With the 1st overall pick in the 2015 NHL entry draft the Edmonton Oilers are proud to select…”
