Now that the Toronto Maple Leafs are rebuilding, teams around the league will be calling GM Dave Nonis to see the value of the Maple Leafs core players. Teams that already have gotten past the initial stage of the rebuild should do whatever it takes to acquire players like Phil Kessel, James Van Riemsdyk, and Nazem Kadri (if they are available). These teams have the young core already and in my opinion are the Sabres, Panthers, Flames, and Avalanche.
If you are GM Tim Murray, would you trade for Phil Kessel to put your team over the top?
2015 1st Round Pick (one of the two later picks that isn’t sent to Winnipeg)
2016 1st Round Pick
2015 2nd Round Pick
The trade would add an elite Right Winger making the projected top 3 lines for 2015
**Note: the lineup is under the circumstances that Stewart isn’t traded, Hodgson isn’t bought out, and Kaleta is resigned.
LW C RW
Evander Kane Connor McDavid Phil Kessel
Matt Moulson Sam Reinhart Chris Stewart
Marcus Foligno Zemgus Girgensons Brian Gionta
Nicolas Deslauriers Mikhail Grigeronko Hudson Fasching
Matt Ellis Cody Hodgson Patrick Kaleta
Tim Murray is building his squad with the following important aspect per line, 1 physical bruiser, 1 talented puck mover, 1 sniper/playmaker
Keeping Chris Stewart would fit the mold that Murray is targeting and would be a great top 6 forward next to Moulson and Reinhart. Would you give up the prospective trade to Toronto to acquire Kessel?
And Maple Leafs fans, would you be willing to part ways with Phil Kessel for the combination of picks/players?
Tyler Ennis is developing into a good center and looks like a top line center in the making.
Mark Psysk is developing into a top 6 defensive pairing
2015 1st round pick would be 20-30
2016 1st round would be a 10-20 pick as the Sabres will hopefully be much better in 2015.
