The City of Glendale called to order a last minute meeting shortly after meeting with Arizona Coyotes minority owner and president Anthony LeBlanc and majority owner Andrew Barroway. During this meeting the council asked the Arizona Coyotes organization if they could renegotiate. What they meant was, they are going to tell the Coyotes to negotiate or else they will pursue legal action. Of course the LeBlanc and Barroway declined the gracious offer and proceeded to move on with their lives. The City of Glendale however, decided no doesn’t actually mean no, and that how dare they say no, and that they were calling a for a council meeting to vote on if they are going to try and terminate the lease agreement or not.
DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION TO DIRECT THE CITY MANAGER AND CITY ATTORNEY TO CANCEL THE PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT SERVICES AND ARENA LEASE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY OF GLENDALE AND ICEARIZONA MANAGER CO., LLC AND ICEARIZONA HOCKEY CO., LLC, PURSUANT TO
ARIZONA REVISED STATUTES § 38-511, AND TO PURSUE ANY AND ALL OTHER LEGAL ACTIONS AND REMEDIES NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE CANCELLATION OR TERMINATION OF THE AGREEMENT
Which brings us here at 9:05pm in Arizona, two hours after the vote. For those of you that missed out on the action (it was pretty entertaining) I am here to recap this event for you. So here we go….
The meeting first started off with a prayer, even though I am sure there should be separation between church and state. Anyways, they will probably need that prayer and any luck for whatever comes after. Then the regular council speak and what not.
The Arizona Coyotes attorney Nick Wood was the first that I head to speak to mayor and the council. Mr.Wood went over that fact the city has no ground to stand on when trying to wiggle out of a two year old agreement. What the 38-511 says something along the lines as a city employee cannot negotiate a deal with the city on the behalf of the other party. Wood pointed out that nothing like that was even close happening. He also said that if the city pursues tries to pursue the termination of the lease agreement, they will face a $200 million dollar lawsuit.
After Mr.Wood finished up and advised that the city of Glendale get a second opinion, Anthony LeBlanc had his turn to speak. LeBlanc noted the amount of money the team generates just being there, stating facts about how much is made in taxes, sales, and all the direct and indirect ways the city makes money. He then echoed the words of Mr.Wood and advised the city to get a second opinion. He also stated because of the actions by the council, the Arizona Coyotes have lost any type of bid or chance at landing the World Junior Championship in 2017.
Once LeBlanc finished speaking the floor was an open mic to whoever was in line. This is where it got entertaining for me and I will try to remember as much as I can because there were some characters and one surprise.
First person to come up to the mic and speak was a lady that does work with youth hockey in Glendale. Her words pretty much echoed the words of LeBlanc, that the city had no ground to stand on that the team does so much for the community. She mentioned the charity work and gave the example of the park the team built.
After that lady was done talking the first anti-coyotes speaker came to the mic. This man was a little hard to understand because of a handicap but from what I got from him was, the Coyotes should leave because the money should go to the homeless. He also thought that they would be more profitable in other cities. At the end he pretty much dropped the mic with a “I’m done”
After that man there were some other people, one was a fellow Coyotes blogger that boasted 9,000 hits per post. My assumption is that it is SBN’s Five For Howling ( this blog is better, trust me I’m not biased at all). He was pretty emotional and compared the situation on parents fighting and one parent is ripping the arm off of the other. Not joking, that was used.
Then there was another anti-coyote guy from Glendale that didn’t like the deal and he was followed by a fellow Glendale resident that was in favor of the lease agreement. Those two were followed by some lady, who I swear her last name was Doan but that might have been my imagination, clearly no relation to Saint Shane.
One of the speakers to come up was the developer of West Gate. He mentioned the growth of West Gate and how since the team has been in Glendale the place put in the Tanger outlet center, and sine then added on to it. Pointed out that there are hotels planned to go up around the area but are waiting city approval. He also noted that city makes money off of the permits and jobs are added. The developer was followed up by a small business owner.
The next person up to speak was a character for sure, she had me laughing and saying “wow” a dozen times. This lady was very against the Coyotes, I think but I am not sure. Her argument was that since the growth of the city there have been smoke shops, vape shops, and hookah shops popping up. There are murders now in Glendale and kids sagging their pants. So, is she trying to say that the Arizona Coyotes cause smoke shops and murder? I’m still trying to figure that one out
After that a couple more people came up and spoke. One talked about the good the team has done, another had her daughter say “Go Coyotes” in the mic after she talked about the good things the team does for the community, and another told Mayor Wiers that he never supports the team, he gets free tickets but she has supported the team by being a dedicated season ticket holder. Oh yeah, somewhere in there was a native American that was pretty much saying, “Can’t we all just get along?”
Last person to speak was surely a sign or a curve ball in my mind. Reverend Maupin was very against the lease agreement when it first was up for vote. Surely he will be for canceling the agreement immediately, but he wasn’t. Rev. Maupin was urging the Glendale city Council to give it a week to think about. If the city has lost Maupin, there is no chance for them.
Finally, it ended with council members speaking and giving their opinions and thought. Then the vote came 3-4 in favor of pursing to cancel the lease agreement. The ones that were in favor of the termination said that they were looking out for the tax payers or just trying to uphold the law. What a joke.
After the meeting the Arizona Coyotes released this statement with a video of a interview with the media.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:Wednesday, June 10, 2015
GLENDALE, ARIZONA — Arizona Coyotes Co-Owner, President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc issued the following statement following tonight’s Glendale City Council meeting.
“We are disappointed with the city’s decision to violate its obligations under the agreement that was entered into and duly approved only two years ago. We will exhaust any and all legal remedies against the city of Glendale for this blatant violation of its contractual obligations to us.”
Don’t forget, the City of Glendale has not only set fire to a team who’s majority owner is an accomplished lawyer, but they have also rattled the cage of the NHL. The NHL with tons of money and legal team that shred the City Council with a thought…Put down those matches Glendale, you are going to get burned.
*Excuse any mistakes..I’ll edit this later..Don’t get paid to stay up this late!
