This is one of the best times of the NHL off season, which is when training camps are starting and hockey season is just around the corner. For the Arizona Coyotes the rookie training camp has wrapped up today and the young players are now headed to Los Angeles to play the Kings rookie team.
To sum up how the camp went, it may have seemed underwhelming. First day of camp was Saturday and before the on ice practice all the players underwent physical testing. So, the first day the players were a little sluggish for the on ice drills.
Second and third day the coaching staff tried out some line combinations, one that has been unofficially dubbed the 3D line, consisting of Domi, Duclair and Dvorak. Domi and Duclair stood out from everyone and other notables were Perlini, Merkley, Garland, and Strome. Although, Strome seemed average for 3rd pick overall behind McEichel but it could be that he is adjusting. This could also be that the roster is pretty much set and trying to standout might seem pointless.
One of the players that wasn’t noticeable was Henrik Samuelsson. For being a first round draft pick and having so much promise, the past couple of years have really been a let down. He is about to be leapfrogged by Domi and possibly some other prospects from more recent draft years. It might be best to give him a shot on another team that could use a big power forward. He and his brother Philip could be a great addition in a trade to get some picks or a solid roster player. The brothers could be put into a package with Chipchura, Vitale or even Boedker.
A similar situation happened with now former Arizona Coyotes prospect Brandon Gormley. Gormley wasn’t performing well enough, was leapfrogged by Connor Murphy and (Santa) Klas Dahlbeck. The organization also had too many left handed defenseman, so the Coyotes traded him to the Colorado Avalanche. The Coyotes got in return Stefan Elliot in the one for one swap. Elliot is a right handed defenseman with good offensive upside. Sort of a right handed Keith Yandle but much more undeveloped.
Anyway, the Coyote rookies will be playing the Kings rookies tomorrow night. Last year there was a live feed to watch the game, hope there will be one this year. Tomorrows game is at 6:00 pm and Wednesday game is at 2:00pm.
