The NHL decided to make a rule addition, by adding the Coaches Challenge to the 2015-2016 Season.
The rule is a good start, by allowing Coaches the ability to request a challenge IF:
-Scoring player interferes with goalie
-Offsides leads to goal
A quick search on twitter of “NHL Coaches Challenge” and you see many say this added rule is the worst rule yet, and that many feel like the rule makes the NHL more like the NFL.
The main gripe with the Coaches Challenge is having an Offsides affect a goal, no matter how long the team posses the puck in the zone, if they enter by means of Offsides, and score, its a no-goal. Many teams have already been affected by the Offsides Challenge, the Sabres have definitely been affected a few times by the challenge.
If the scoring team enters the zone and scores a goal due to an offsides, too bad, its a rule whether you like it or not. If you don’t like the fact that the Refs take up your precious time, again too bad, this is making sure they get things right.
The fans saying this slows the game down need to realize this rule will only grow, and allow much more to be Challenged by the Coaches. The game will only benefit from having blatant missed calls being avoided by Coaches Challenges, allowing the misses to turn into crucial calls not being missed. Can you imagine, if Lindy Ruff had the ability to challenge Brett Hull’s infamous “No Goal”? Buffalo would’ve won that Challenge, and the game would’ve continued, and not ended on, what at the time, was an illegal goal.
Yes, it will slow the game down, but the NHL Is a much faster game than the NFL, and less TV timeouts, it won’t have as big as an affect. Let’s face it. The NFL’s TV timeouts are extremely pricey for airtime, and the game itself see’s much more viewers per game than the NHL does.
The NHL will surely add what Coaches can challenge, and it will only benefit the game. Missed penalties will be avoided by mental errors, or just plain missing the call. Resisting this rule is a waste, as it will gain ground when a playoff game is saved this year due to a Coaches Challenge. Just watch. You hate it now, because it is a new rule and needs the kinks worked out. But down the road, the idea will only improve the game.
