As depressing this is to write, Connor McDavid made his return from his 37 game absence (collarbone) and helped spark this cellar dweller of a franchise to a victory. In fact, he had a goal and 2 assists in the Oilers 5-1 win over last place Columbus.
McDavid will be the catalyst that finally puts this horrid recent stretch behind them. The Oilers will finally have the young core of forwards develop into the stars they were expected to be, and see them make the playoffs, this season. It isn’t impossible, with the Oilers currently sitting 7 points back with 31 games remaining. McDavid will be the spark plug to jump start this offense, that hasn’t been competitive, and struggles to put up points.
This franchise has been a laughing stock, constantly rebuilding, constantly holding a high lottery draft pick. Getting McDavid, made fans across the league (including himself) upset of his landing spot, hoping for either Buffalo, or Toronto to land him, so he could be close to home and on a franchise that isn’t known for losing. He even showed disgust on the Lottery night, when it was shown that Edmonton had won the first pick in the Lottery, and would be eventually selecting McDavid.
Fast forward 10 months, the Oilers stand at 21-26-5 (47 Points) and 9 points outside of the playoffs. Edmonton is completely healthy, with McDavid back, and should be able to put up consistent offense, with tendy Cam Talbot playing lights out. The Oilers may have a perfect storm brewing here, and I fully expect them to make a big run, and catch at least the last wildcard spot. McDavid is a dirty, stick handler, as he showed Tuesday.
Sabres fans will start to groan, every night, as McDavid pushes this team towards the playoffs, and Buffalo sit battling for last place.
