Last season, these “Battle for the Bottom” games, had much hype, but this game is definitely a must lose game. Buffalo currently sits 4 points behind Toronto for last place, and needs to hope their recent stretch (4-3-3) isn’t a sign of what’s to come over the final 24 games.
Buffalo and Columbus both currently have 53 points in 58 games played, which makes this game extremely important in the positioning for the bottom.
Evander Kane has found his scoring touch, that many fans questioned if he had, with 6 goals in the last 8 games. Ryan O’Reilly has 8 assists in the last 7 games, and the team has been playing competitive hockey for 60 minutes on a regular basis.
The Blue Jackets haven’t had one particular player standout like Buffalo has, with only a +4 goal differential in their recent 10 game stretch. The Blue Jackets are 6-3-1 in their last 10 which has seen them rise from 30th, to a 3 way tie for 28th.
Both teams are long shots to see a playoff hockey come April, and both teams have accepted their fate as cellar dwellers.
Losing the 2 final two games against one other will count as a win in the tank book. These games help widen the gap between the bottom.
Root for a win all you want, but it won’t help the rebuild AT ALL.
